Delight at Home

Delight at Home was our Covid-19 response project designed to support the creative and academic learning and life skills of children at our partner primary schools who were experiencing the most hardship.

School closures were difficult for many children but especially those for whom school was a place of safety, stimulation, and caring. For many, this disruption negatively impacted their mental health and well-being with thousands of children across the UK lacking online access, personal books, or basic resources, all essential for learning at home.

Our Delight at Home projects were specially designed to support 2,000 children made vulnerable by their specific circumstances, providing creative resources, support, and well-being activities.

Bags of Delight

Bags of Delight provided children who had few or no books of their own the opportunity to continue developing their love of reading. Reusable canvas bags were filled with a collection of age-appropriate high-quality books, allowing children to immerse themselves in the world of imagination and learning. During the Covid-19 school closures, Delight partnered with primary schools across Surrey to deliver 6,000 books directly to the homes of children who needed them most.

Box of Delight

From the moment a Box of Delight arrived on a child’s doorstep, the adventure began. Each creative activity included in the box was designed to have a ‘wow’ factor, as children worked step-by-step through four art activities. The activities were carefully designed to be child-led, supported with easy-to-follow print instructions and short ‘how-to’ films. Each box included enough materials for a child to repeat each activity or share the project with siblings or parents/carers.

Exhibition – Swoop Birds of Delight

The children’s final ‘Box of Delight’ creations — a collection of beautiful, individually decorated 3D birds — were assembled in a special outdoor celebratory installation created by Paintbox artist Gina McAdam in August 2020 at Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village.

“We have all been amazed at how well organised & equipped the boxes are; everything has been thought about. We have had positive feedback from every single child.” – Teacher, Surrey Primary School
